The Lost Battalion, by Charles Krohn, published by Praeger Publishing. Written by a former S-2 of 2/12 Cav who participated in the described actions. The book covers LZ Leslie & LZ Ross in January 1968 and the fight to Hue in early February 1968. The is the same period for which the 2/12 Cav received the Presidential Unit Citation. Nine men of the 2/12 Cav received DSC awards during the time frame of the PUC: Dobrinska, Gaskin, Gregory, Helvey, Lewis, Ring, Stone, Sweet and Taylor. Book Cover

Battles in the Monsoon, by S.L.A. Marshall, published by William Morrow & Company. Written by military historian S.L.A. Marshall in his classic style of writing which is based on interviews with the survivors immediately after a battle. The chapter titled "Almost Hill 766" is about the actions of Company B, 2/12th Cavalry, led by Captain Joe Beeman, during Operation Crazy Horse in 1966. Although his story is not mentioned, this is the action for which  SSG Jimmy Stewart received the Medal of Honor. Another chapter "Men Facing Death" is the story of the Mortar Platoon of Company C, 1/12th Cavalry which was almost annihilated in May 1966 at LZ Hereford.

Marshall in his classic style of writing which is based on interviews with the survivors immediately after a battle. This book covers in great detail the December 27, 1966 fight by Company C, 1/12 Cav at LZ Bird. The Presidential Unit Citation was awarded for this action. So Proudly He Served: The Sam Bird Story, By Annette Bird, et al., published by Okarche Books. An inspirational story written by the wife of Sam Bird, commander of Company B, 2/12th Cavalry who suffered a devastating head wound in January 1967. He died of his wounds in October 1984.  

Shiny Bayonet, by Michael O. Gregory, published by Trafford Publishing. Written by a member of Company B, 1/12 Cav who participated in the described actions. This is a historical account of the first combat operation of the 1st Battalion (Airborne), 12th Cavalry in October 1965. Cover

Vietnam Studies Airmobility 1961-1971, by LTG John J. Tolson, published by the Department of the Army. Written by a former commander of the 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile). A large portion of the book is about the 1st Cav with very good coverage of Operation Pegasus (Khe Sanh) and Operation Delaware (A Shau Valley). One Young Soldier, by Gary DeRinge, published by Outskirts Press. Gary was the Platoon Sergeant of the 3^rd Platoon, Company D, 1/12^th Cavalry in 1969 and this historical novel is based on his experiences.  Book Cover

Year of the Horse - Vietnam, by Col. Kenneth D. Mertel, published by Exposition Press. Written by a former 1/8 Cav Battalion Commander about his tour in 1965 and 1966. There is minor mention of both 1/12 and 2/12 Cav.

Combat Medic-Vietnam, by Craig Roberts, published by Pocket Books, a division of Simon & Schuster Inc. One story is of "Doc" Bosma from C Battery, 1/77 Artillery at PK-17 in February 1968. Although not about 2/12 Cav the Battery supported 2/12 Cav during the Battle for Hue.

Boy Sergeant, Doug Warden, published by Tate Publishing. The book is an account of a draftee in Charlie Company, 1st BN, 12th Cavalry, from May, 1967 to May, 1968. Warden was a rifleman, RTO for the platoon and company, squad leader, platoon sergeant and platoon leader at various times during his tour. It is a straightforward account of the daily life of an infantryman in combat with the 1st Cavalry.

Beyond Duty, by Shannon Meehan, Published by John Wiley & Sons, Incorporated. Lt. Shannon Meehan was a decorated tank commander with Delta Company, 1/12th Cavalry, who was displaying exceptional leadership abilities during his tour of duty in Iraq. On one mission, when they were clearing a dangerous area house by house, he called in an air strike on a suspected insurgents location. He followed all procedure and even went further, sending loudspeakers and translators directly in front of the house to warn everyone inside to get out. Despite visual identification, local Intel, loudspeaker warnings, the worst happened. The precision guided bomb destroyed a house with a family inside. Beyond Duty is the story of how Lt. Meehan has been struggling with the consequences of his decision.

The 13th Valley, by John M. Delvecchio, published by Bantam Books. A New York Times best seller written by a former 101st Airborne Division combat correspondent who worked in the A Shau area during 1970. This fictional account is based on a composite of actual events from several operations. If you worked in the A Shau or the mountains outside of A Shau valley then you will relate to this detailed account of the day to day operations of an infantry platoon.
